WHAT IS ONLINE COUNSELING?

WHAT ARE THE PROS + CONS OF ONLINE COUNSELING VS. TRADITIONAL FACE-TO-FACE SESSIONS?
PROS OF ONLINE COUNSELING

Accessibility + convenience: Online counseling allows you to hop onto a session anywhere at any time (including from your bed)! This makes it easier to fit therapy into your schedule without having to factor in travel time or moving around your schedule.
Here for you anywhere (as long as you’re in Texas!): Just as with traditional therapy, you must see a counselor licensed in your state; however, online counseling opens up more options to see counselors further away who might be just the right fit for your needs.
Comfort + ease of anxiety: Connecting online can reduce anxiety about getting stuck in traffic, making it to therapy on time, being around others, or just going to therapy in general (talking about feelings is tough – we understand!). It may feel more comfortable to explore difficult topics from the security of your own home.
CONS OF ONLINE COUNSELING
Neutral space: Although virtual therapy may be more comfortable for some people, not everyone has a private space, so it could be difficult to share personal information. Additionally, it can be therapeutic to get away from everyday life by attending in person sessions in a more neutral space.
Body language + visual cues: We communicate with more than just words, and body language can be more difficult to discern via virtual therapy.
Intensive treatment: Some therapeutic approaches require more intensive treatment that is easier to facilitate in person. Additionally, some modalities are more convenient in person, such as play therapy, art therapy, and somatic therapy; however, these can be facilitated online as well.
Internet issues: Wi-fi issues, Internet lag, and technical difficulties can interrupt the flow of a session which can be very frustrating. As therapists, we have definitely learned to become creative and flexible when technological issues arise.
